Ruby Rockpool's top tips for helping to save our seas

What can you do to help? Here's our top tips for saving our oceans and making small changes that add up to big changes for our planet. From making tiny swaps and being a more eco minded consumer.

  1. ​Reduce your plastic waste by not buying single use plastic items such as; plastic fizzy drinks bottles, plastic cups and containers, plastic plates.

  2. Make sure your recycling is clean, loose and dry. Contaminated recycling ends up in landfill.

  3. Swap shampoo and soap in plastic bottles for soap bars and shampoo bars.

  4. Go for bamboo products like toothbrushes, hairbrushes, travel mugs, travel cutlery.

  5. Carry a reusable water bottle.

  6. Use the Refill app to find local free refill stations www.refill.org.uk

  7. Take your own reusable shopping bags.

  8. Repair old toys, clothes or upcycle, check out Pinterest for loads of good upcycling ideas

  9. Use beeswax food wraps instead of cling film or foil

  10. Go for boxed products rather than plastic

  11. Research home remedies for cleaning products like lemons and bicarbonate of soda, which can be less harmful to the ocean

  12. Check out your local water companies for free save water kits www.reducereuserecycle.co.uk

  13. Remember what goes down the drain ends up in the ocean
